Autism Assessments

We offer gold-standard diagnostic assessments for autism from ages 8+, combining clinical expertise with a respectful, person-centred approach.

At SNAPS we provide specialist, neuroaffirming autism assessments for children, young people and adults. Our approach recognises that autism is a natural variation in how brains work, rather than a disorder that needs fixing. We aim to offer compassionate, respectful, and evidence-based assessments that empower individuals and families to better understand neurodivergent identity, needs, and strengths.

Why choose us?

  • Gold Standard Assessments

We follow internationally recognised, gold standard protocols recommended by organisations such as NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence), the National Autistic Society (NAS), and leading research bodies.

  • Comprehensive, Holistic Approach

Our assessments go beyond simply identifying difficulties. We explore strengths, challenges, support needs, and co-occurring conditions to provide a full, nuanced picture.

  • Experienced, Specialist Clinicians

Our multidisciplinary team includes highly trained clinians with extensive experience in neurodiversity assessments.

  • Neuroaffirming Values

We embrace neurodiversity as a natural and valuable part of human difference. Our assessments avoid deficit-focused language and aim to validate each individual's lived experience.

  • Supportive Experience

We understand that assessments can feel daunting. Our team offers a calm, compassionate environment where individuals feel heard, respected, and safe.

Our Gold Standard Assessment Tools

Our assessment process typically includes.

  • A semi-structured, standardised assessment widely recognised as a gold standard for autism diagnosis.

  • A detailed developmental interview with parents or caregivers, especially for child assessments. text goes here

  • Gathering information about early development, education, social functioning, and daily living skills.

  • or similar measures to explore day-to-day functioning.

  • Self-report questionnaires for adults (e.g., AQ, CATQ) to understand traits from the individual's perspective.

  • Cognitive assessments where indicated, to rule out or explore co-occurring learning needs.

  • School observation (where appropriate).

Signs of Autism in Children

Every autistic person is different, but some signs in children may include:

Intense interests or highly focused play on specific topics

Sensory differences (over- or under-sensitive to sounds, lights, textures, smells)

Strong need for routine, difficulty with unexpected changes

Differences in communication (may have delayed speech, echolalia, or prefer nonverbal communication)

Repetitive behaviours (such as hand-flapping, rocking, lining up objects)

Signs of Autism in adults

Many autistic adults may not have been identified in childhood, especially women and those who mask or camouflage traits. Common signs include:

Feeling socially exhausted or overwhelmed after interaction

Sensory sensitivities that impact daily life

Difficulty reading social cues, facial expressions, or understanding unwritten rules

Challenges with flexible thinking or adapting to unexpected change

Emotional regulation difficulties

Preference for routine and predictability

Feeling 'different' but not always knowing why

A Neuroaffirming Approach

Our goal is not to 'diagnose' in a medicalised way, but rather to help people better understand their neurotype, access appropriate supports, and embrace their identity. We believe that with understanding and the right accommodations, autistic people thrive.
